Tristian has shown his true nature — although, I must admit, he did not become less mysterious to us after that. We need to find him, wherever he is, and find out why he betrayed the {baron/baroness}, left us in the midst of the battle, and, most importantly, why he had to leave so quickly!

We have been betrayed. Tristian escaped through a Bloom portal! The fact he was able to use portal magic means the scoundrel must be behind this scourge — or at least have something to do with it! We must wait till the new portal opens — I think we will find Tristian near the next Bloom when it erupts!

Bloom returned to the long-suffering lands of {baron/baroness}, and in a strange place, too — on Candlemere Lake, long known for being a strange and dangerous place. We must head there at once! We can still catch up with Tristian — a Bloom has been sighted recently, and we can intercept him! Tristian has entered a portal leading to the Temple of the Elk. We must hurry! Tristian slipped away again. Magic may be on his side, but we know the roads of the barony well — so we still have time to catch him, if we go right now! The portal brought us to a strange dungeon. There was no sign of Tristian — but he may be somewhere inside the fortress. We need to search this place — at least so that we can find a way out!

Chasing Tristian through the barony ended unexpectedly — we not only learned who Tristian really was, but who is behind his betrayal and our other troubles. Her name is Nyrissa, and she is more insidious and cunning than we could imagine!

Notes

• Doing this quest first instead of Hour of Rage will allow an extra opportunity to curry favor with Nyrissa, though she can be successfully romanced either way.
• If you are romancing Tristian, this quest MUST be done first.
• To obtain the Oculus of Abaddon, assuming Tristian didn't break it at Vordakai's Tomb, you must kill Tristian.
• You are not locked into this path merely by meeting with Tristian at Candlemere Tower. Hour of Rage can no longer be finished first only if Tristian is pursued into the portal at the Temple of the Elk.

Walkthrough

Explore the Candlemere Bloom

• Go to Candlemere Tower.
• Reach the tower itself and talk with Tristian.
• Click on the portal and defeat the waves of enemies.

Explore the Temple of the Elk Bloom / Follow Tristian through the Bloom

• Go to the Temple of the Elk.
• Enter the portal to Abandoned Keep. This is a turning point of whether you do Betrayer's Flight or Hour of Rage first.

Explore the abandoned fortress

• In the library section you can find a hidden room with Book Event (Abandoned Keep Library):
  • Passing both Knowledge (Arcana) DC 25 +180xp and 15 +18xp checks allows you to activate a friendly golem Iron Golem (Abandoned Keep) to help you in the final fight of the dungeon. It also unlocks Magic of the Abandoned Keep project in Dire Narlmarches.
  • Attempting Fortitude DC 23 +90xp check gives Lost Dwarven Knowledge project, failure will also apply Sickened to whole party for 60min.
  • Passing Mobility DC 25 +180xp check gives you few scrolls.
• If you had used [Requires Good] line with Defaced Sister (Sepulcher of Forgotten Heroes) back in Sepulcher of Forgotten Heroes then you will meet her here.
  1. You can make her disappear with (Chaotic Good) option, you will meet her again way later.
  2. Or you can let her sacrifice herself so that your party gets Good Hope buff for 10min.

Defeat the Defaced Sister

• Approach the room with Defaced Sister (Abandoned Keep) and Tristian.
• If you came here before Hour of Rage then you will get to talk with Guardian of the Bloom, if you also had an encounter with her in Other World (Guardian of the Bloom Visit) then you can rise or decrease romance score with her in the end of dialogue.
• The talk with Defaced Sister (Abandoned Keep) will end up in combat. Don't worry about Tristian's survival in combat, he will stand up after the fight.
  • There is a part of dialogue where you can select (Neutral Good) response in which Tristian will smite down the Defaced Sister (Abandoned Keep), it requires selecting two romance options or two [Good-only] options while talking to him in Candlemere Tower and Temple of the Elk. But currently there is no known way to trigger him spawning in Temple of the Elk during this quest, rendering this option unavailable.

Confront Tristian

• After adversaries are defeated you get to talk with Tristian.
  • If Oculus of Abaddon was not shattered in Vordakai's Tomb he will first ask you to let him destroy it.
    1. Kill him to get the item from Defaced Sister's body.
    2. Let him do it with unaligned or (Lawful Good) response.
  • As long as you didn't kill Tristian you get to ask him several questions, eventually leading to deciding his fate:
    1. [Hold Tristian] "Let me take you home." to forgive him if you successfully advanced his romance. You get Tristian back and Research into the Nature of Curses: Tristian project.
    2. (Neutral Good) or (Neutral) to forgive him. You get Tristian back and Research into the Nature of Curses: Tristian project.
    3. (Lawful Neutral) to banish him from your lands.
    4. (Lawful Evil) to kill him.
• You get Research into the Nature of Curses: The Defaced Sisters project.
• You can exit the area now.
