Base Attack Bonus (BAB) defines a creature's basic ability to land a damaging hit on an enemy if no other bonuses or modifiers would play a role. To see how the Base Attack Bonus affects combat, see Combat.

A character's BAB increases with higher levels automatically depending on his or her Class. When multiclassing, levels in classes with low and medium BAB progression do not quite stack, i.e. 4 levels in Bard class (medium BABP) equals to 3 BAB while 3 levels in Bard and 1 level in Alchemist (also medium BABP) only equal to 2 BAB. Therefore for the sake of BAB it is best to have 4/8/12/16/20 levels in medium BABP classes or 2/4/6/.../20 levels in low BABP classes. High BABP classes increase BAB on every level so multiclassing in them never undermines BAB progression.

To phrase this in an alternative way, multiclassing or "dipping" just one level in any Medium or Low growth class results in a 1 BAB penalty when compared to High growth class dips. However, the next 3 levels in the Medium or 1 level in the Low class would not penalize additional BAB points. Thus, only one cycle of 1-4 levels in Medium or 1-2 levels in Low growth classes won't terribly hinder melee classes, but the BAB gap grows with every additional Medium/Low multiclass cycle.

Every six points of Base Attack Bonus will allow the character to perform a second attack when attacking as a Full-Round Action. This second attack is made at an Attack Bonus five points lower than the first attack, and should a character gain a high enough Base Attack Bonus for a third attack, it’s made five points lower than the second attack, and ten points lower than the first. For example, a 6th-Level Fighter has a Base Attack Bonus of +6/+1; their primary attack has a +6 Base Attack, while their second attack receives a +1 Base Attack Bonus.
