"We were taken out on walks once every two days. Pen and paper were allowed for the first two months, then banned – by special order of the commandant. After that they were issued only to write letters to family. I learned later that all the letters were read by the commandant but never sent to the addressees.
In the prison, all of us – those arrested by Irovetti for political reasons rather than real crimes – immediately formed a circle to protect ourselves from the other prisoners. Their bandit habits and morals were alien to us, so we tried to hold together, helping each other to remain human.
On two occasions, I had to go to 'the nest': the first time during the riot in the dining room, caused by the disgusting food, and the second time when they suspected me of plotting an escape. 'The nest' was the name of one of the towers on the outskirts, where the torture rooms were located. Prison guards carried out interrogations there, assisted by special prisoners, those who cooperated with the commandant."
